Beer of the Cape Fear - Wilmington Area Breweries & Beer-Centric Events
The Cape Fear Region has quickly made a name for itself in the world of micro brews. As one of the fastest growing beer communities in the southeast, Wilmington is home to almost 20 (and counting!) breweries. There is a pint and an atmosphere to fit every beer lover’s interest. Most area breweries are family and pet-friendly and host events such as pop-up farmers and artisan markets, outdoor movies, live music, dinner pairings, tap takeovers and more!
The month of March is a big one for the Cape Fear beer community. If you are looking to explore over 100 local and regional favorites, check out the Cape Fear Beer Festival on March 9. The host, Cape Fear Craft Beer Alliance, partners with local breweries, bottle shops, and restaurants to create a supportive community focused on increasing the visibility of Cape Fear region brewers through community events and education. Cape Fear Craft Beer Week (March 22-31) presents exciting opportunities to join in on the fun of Wilmington’s beer tourism by inviting participants to explore local venues that focus on craft beer and great food. Events throughout the week vary from beer dinners to cooking classes and conclude with a beer and food pairing dinner, Cape Fear Craft + Cuisine, at Airlie Gardens. Check out their website for more details about each event!
For those of you in Wilmington visiting RiverLights, make sure you venture to some of our favorite spots around town. Life on the coast is laid back and best paired with a local brew. Check out our staff favorites and recommendations!
Andy, Project Manager: Waterline Red and Bill’s Front Porch Pub Ale are a tie in this guy’s book but honestly, if it’s cold, it’s for Andy.
Jim, VP of Operations: Loves the Belgian Blonde from Edward Teach but his all-time favorite NC beer is White Zombie from Catawba Brewing.
Tara, Assistant Project Manager: When asked for her favorite local beer, she responded “Tropppppicaaaallll Lightning!” which speaks for itself.
Elizabeth, Marketing Manager: A recently transplant to Wilmington, she has discovered the beauty of Tropical Lightning from Wilmington Brewing with help from Tara and Catherine.
Caitlin, Marketing Coordinator: A big fan of Waterline’s Kolsh in the heat of summer. Pairs perfectly with a treat from any of the food trucks that Waterline regularly hosts!
Catherine, Customer Relations Coordinator: A hophead til the end, she loves the IPAs at New Anthem and refuses to choose a favorite.
Hailey, Community Representative: Recommends Wilmington Brewing for their warehouse full of yard games and convenient midtown location.
Jared, Community Representative: Named after the infamous Blackbeard, Edward Teach Brewing downtown is a great spot to catch live music and relax with friends.
Many of the beers mentioned can be found at RiverLights very own bottle shop, Southern Shores, right here in Marina Village. Make sure you stop in to see Josh… he can help steer you in the right direction! Enjoy a drink at the bar or mix and match a sixer to take home. Southern Shores offers package carry-out which makes it the perfect place to swing by after a long day!
